Hi all! Katie here from the summer '08 course. We bought a house in Minneapolis--a great old neighborhood--and last fall sheet mulched in prep for the spring planing. I got six fruit trees in--first time ever! The front yard became a really wonder...

Is There Such a Thing as Agro-Imperialism?

Yet another very significant article from the NY Times. How aware are we of what is happening in other countries around food prices and availability? We seem to be sheltered too easily from these realities. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/22/magazine/22land-t.html?ref=magazine

Corporate-Owned Water and Its Failures (To Say the Least)

A recent article spells out the pitfalls of corporate-owned water around the world. http://academic.evergreen.edu/g/grossmaz/VANOVEDR/

Thanks Everyone

Here I am in California in the foothills of the Sierras with another inspired group of students! We are working our way slowly through the curriculum and I am remembering all of you and all your inspiration with this work. Thanks for communicating through this site and helping to keep the work alive. Tomorrow we are off for site visits on the San Juan Ridge to some farms. Wish you could all be here with us. We are teaching at the Sivananda Yoga Ashram. Good people, good food, and Permaculture. W… Continue

Greetings from Morehead, KY

Happy to share what's going on in the foothills of Appalachia. In May of this year (by a synchronistic fate) I happened to be riding my bicycle to see a friend when I happened to see another friend of mine riding his bicycle the opposite direction. This "chance" meeting led to meeting more people the same evening after a trip to the beautiful Red River Gorge. This story is really very fun to tell in person, where the audience can be assessed and the more intimate details of this evening can be f… Continue

Hello All Permaculturists,

I took my PDC last Nov. 08 in Grass Valley. We have been busy here in Central California working on some large permaculture design elements. I have a blog which I update every week with our progress and other musings. Here is the link. I try to have lots of photos. Right now we are working on a 250 foot swale that we had dug. If interested go give it a look. The photos on this site are great!! Thanks for the invite Wayne.… Continue

what to grow in the fall

If i want to grow anything here at my home (Largo, FL), i have to do it in pots, since i live in an apartment.

My apartment building faces North. I live downstairs. There is a walkway in front of my building. The upstairs walkway casts a shadow on my walkway, which is where i would plan for my plants to be. I don't plan to grow anything indoors, as i don't intend to keep any blinds open (for light) while i'm at work all day. My pots would be on the shaded walkway, like i said. I suppose i could… Continue
